A genuine artifact of pre-color-pie Magic, when the design team was still figuring out which problems were worth solving and which mana costs were worth charging. The effect is structurally bizarre by modern standards: a colorless, repeatable damage prevention engine that taxes you one mana per unblocked attacker but caps incoming combat damage at one regardless of the creature's size. A 12/12 trampler and a 2/2 are equally neutered, the kind of asymmetry the game stopped printing once designers understood how completely it warps combat math. The activation cost being mana rather than life or cards is the other tell: in 1993 the resource curves had not been pressure-tested, and a permanent that converted floating mana into near-total combat immunity slipped through because nobody had yet built the decks that would abuse it. The "of your choice" wording is its own quiet sophistication: the ability does not target, so it sails past shroud, hexproof, and protection that would otherwise wall off a targeted prevention spell. That phrasing took years of rules cleanup to land on; the original Alpha text was famously murky and has been errata'd into its current shape. Reserved List status has frozen it as a collector's piece, but the design itself reads as a museum exhibit: the moment when Magic was still willing to print a colorless answer to unblocked attackers for three mana, before the color pie decided that kind of work belonged to white.
