The threshold here is doing sly balancing work. A one-mana pump that reads +2/+2 by default and doubles to +4/+4 once you control four or more creatures ties its ceiling directly to the board state a go-wide deck already builds toward, which means the reward peaks when you are ahead rather than behind. That is deliberately the opposite of a comeback tool: the top-heavy deck that most wants one enormous creature gets only the pedestrian version, while the token or small-creature deck that hardly needs any single body to be large collects the full bonus almost as a formality. As a combat trick, the same math makes it insurance against a lone damage-based removal spell, letting you spend the mana to keep an attacker alive and swinging bigger, and the instant speed opens the usual windows: ambushing a blocker, pushing the last points on a crack-back, or bluffing when the mana is held up. The conditional prices it low enough for aggro to run without handing control or midrange a blowout, since the +4/+4 line simply is not available to the decks that would most abuse a large single pump. It slots the cheap, scaling common-rarity trick that a wide creature deck wants in the turns that decide a race.
