Flourishing Defenses
The wither and -1/-1 counter mechanics carried a structural lopsidedness from the controller's side: every counter you placed only shrank the opposing board, with nothing flowing back to yours. This enchantment inverts that asymmetry into an engine, and the key is that it fires per counter, not per creature. Each individual -1/-1 counter that lands (yours, an opponent's, placed by you or by a card on your behalf) mints a body. That distinction is the whole math. Black Sun's Zenith cast for three against three creatures places nine counters total, so you walk away with nine Elf Warriors, not three. The synergy that makes it sing is anything that distributes counters in bulk, where a sweep that erodes an enemy board hands you a small army at the same time. The same logic threads through persist creatures, which return diminished and quietly produce a token every time they recur. The five mana is the tax: it sits idle until a counter-source is already running, so it lives at the top of a deck deliberately built around the mechanic rather than splashing into one. What lifts it past a value piece is the conversion of a subtractive theme into an additive one. The counters that ordinarily only diminish here also accumulate, and a strategy that reads as attrition starts producing a go-wide board as a byproduct.
