Flamecore Elemental
Echo is a layaway mechanic: pay a fraction up front, settle the rest at your next upkeep, or sacrifice the creature. What sharpens this particular bill is the timing of the trigger relative to the body's first swing. A 5/4 for is a generous slab of stats, but echo resolves at the beginning of your upkeep, before combat, and on a creature that arrived summoning-sick and has therefore attacked exactly zero times. So the
echo payment comes due on a body that has done no work at all. You are paying twice for a creature you have not yet swung with: the first fee bought a turn of board presence and the threat of an attack to come, nothing more. Decline the second fee and you have spent only the casting cost, but the 5/4 is gone before it ever connected. Pay it and you have committed two full red-heavy payments to keep a single attacker that still has not landed a hit. Either branch is unforgiving, and neither softens the blow: no card drawn, no death trigger, no value stapled to the loss. That austerity is the point. This is echo with the cushioning stripped out, a large red body whose entire negotiation is the gap between when it enters and when your upkeep demands the rest of the rent.
