The math is the whole problem here: six total mana and a card to deal three damage to a single creature. That is a brutal rate by any modern standard, and it always was. What the design buys with that inflated cost is colorlessness and permanence on the battlefield. A one-mana artifact slips into any deck regardless of color, sits there as a latent threat, and waits for a turn when five extra mana is genuinely free, which in a slow enough game eventually arrives. Because it is an activated ability with no timing restriction, you can hold it up and fire it at instant speed: ambush an attacker, kill a blocker after damage is assigned, remove a fresh threat before it untaps. That flexibility is the one thing keeping the rate from being indefensible, since the cost is paid in tempo and a permanent slot rather than in deckbuilding restriction. The closest kin are the colorless removal pieces that ask you to invest a board slot and a heavy activation in exchange for not caring what colors you play. This is a slower, creature-only entry in that line: it kills nothing larger than a three-toughness body, sacrifices itself in the process, and demands a mana commitment most decks with access to real removal would rather not make. The fixed three damage caps its ceiling hard, and the card ends up reading as curve-filler artifact rather than something anyone builds around.
