Flame Spirit
The firebreather, in its earliest and most unforgiving form. The template (a red creature with a repeatable : +1/+0) is ancient and recurs in nearly every set with a Dragon or an elemental in it, but five mana for a 2/3 body buys a famously weak version of the deal. The whole archetype rests on a single arithmetic problem: every point of damage costs you a red mana, so the firebreather is a mana sink that converts your surplus into combat reach. Where later iterations (Shivan Dragon being the obvious benchmark) pay for the mechanic with evasion and a fat starting body, this one offers neither. A 2/3 that pumps only its power blocks for the same three toughness no matter how much mana you feed it, and it never crosses the ground unaided. The design predates the lesson: firebreathing without evasion or a hard-to-kill frame is a sink with nowhere to go, because the mana you pour in dies the moment the blocker trades, and a creature that can only swell its power has to get through the red zone before the swelling means anything. The mechanic is timeless; the rate around it is the artifact of an era still figuring out what a mana sink was worth.
