Ferocious Charge

Instant2 generic manaGreen mana

The +4/+4 here is straight off the giant-growth lineage, an instant that swings combat math four points and turns a chump block into a trade in your favor. The scry 2 on the back end is the part doing the design work, and it is conditional in a way the rate alone hides: the spell needs a creature to target, so the rider only fires when the combat trick connects. Cast it to push damage and you smooth the next two draws as a bonus; whiff on a board with nothing worth pumping and the card simply stays in hand, because there is nothing legal to point it at. And if the opponent answers your target in response, the whole spell fizzles: no pump, no scry, no consolation. The trade-off is honest. It does not make the trick cheap enough to displace leaner pump when raw rate is what matters, and the scry generates no card advantage; your hand shrinks by one either way. What the rider buys is a slightly higher ceiling on a successful swing, not insurance against a dead draw. The marriage of a combat effect to a library-smoothing back end grew more common as scry spread across the color pie in the years that followed, and this stands as an early instance of the trick-plus-scry pattern green has returned to repeatedly since: bolting a filtering rider onto a pump spell so a successful attack also sets up the turns after it.
