Enchantment — AuraWhite manaWhite manaWhite mana

A pure artifact of Alpha-era design philosophy, when Richard Garfield was still calibrating what an enchantment should cost and what a payoff should look like. The triple-white casting requirement on a three-mana aura, attached to a land that does nothing combat-relevant, gates an upkeep ability that asks for two more white mana every turn to gain a single life. The math is not close: you are spending three white to install the engine, then two white per turn for one life, in an era when Healing Salve gave you three life for a single white at instant speed. The card earns its place as a historical document through the structural template it established: an aura on a land that taxes the controller's mana each upkeep for a recurring trigger. That shape, the land-aura with an ongoing upkeep cost paid by the land's controller, recurs through early design before Wizards largely abandoned it. The card is best understood as a fossil: a record of what the designers thought "incremental life gain" was worth before the development team had any data on how players actually convert resources into wins.
