False Orders

Red has never been the color allowed to remove a blocker once it is declared, but this early instant carves out a sly exception: it asks who the defender is actually blocking with, then rewrites the answer. For a single mana, red reaches into the opponent's committed blocks, yanks one creature out of combat, frees up anything it had blocked alone, and optionally repoints that creature at an attacker of the caster's choosing. The wordy oracle text betrays its age; it was templated before "blocked" and "unblocked" had been formalized as clean combat states, so it spells out the state changes by hand. What carries the design is the cast-only-during-declare-blockers clause: the spell fires in the tightest window in the turn, after blocks are locked in and before damage resolves, which is exactly when a defender feels safest. That timing is the whole gambit. A combat the opponent read as "trade two creatures and live" becomes "lose two creatures and take lethal," and they have no recasting of blocks to fix it. This is the seed of red's long-running redirect-a-blocker lineage, the idea that the color barred from killing a blocker on the stack should at least be permitted to embarrass the defender's combat decisions after they have committed to them. Later successors said the same thing in legible modern wording; this one said it first, in the awkward grammar of a game still inventing its own vocabulary.
