Falkenrath Perforator
A 2/1 for two that guarantees its first point of reach before combat math even begins. The design trick here is subtle: instead of stapling a damage trigger to entering the battlefield or to dealing combat damage, the point lands on the attack declaration itself, before blockers are chosen. That means the damage is unconditional. Chump-block it, kill it in response to the attack trigger, do whatever you like: the defending player still takes one the moment it turns sideways. For an aggressive one-toughness body, this reframes what a bad attack looks like. Even a trade into a larger blocker walks away having pushed a point through, and every attack the card survives is another point on a clock the opponent cannot fully staunch by holding back ground creatures. It is a small piece of the long red project to make marginal attackers relevant by decoupling their damage output from the combat step. The Vampire type gives it a tribal home, but the ability is doing the heavier lifting: it turns a fragile beater into a reliable source of incremental reach, the kind of chip damage that decides races and finishes stalled boards where the ground has gummed up and life totals are the only thing still moving.
