Faithless Looting

SorceryRed mana

The cleanest expression of red's bargain with card selection: it doesn't draw you ahead, it digs. The math is a real cost, not a wash. Casting it eats a card from your hand, and the draw-two-discard-two only refills what you spent, so you come out a card down on the exchange. That deficit is the price for quality: you trade quantity for the right two cards, and in a graveyard deck the two you throw away are not discarded so much as relocated. A Bloodghast pitched here is a creature waiting to recur, a flashback or madness card binned is a spell cast at a discount, so the discard half does double duty as enablement. The flashback tail is the second helping, letting one card filter twice across a game before exiling itself, which softens the card disadvantage by spreading it over two casts rather than two cards' worth of value up front. That dependable engine is exactly why it has been banned in Modern: not for raw power, but for how reliably it assembled reanimation lines and combo pieces the format could not police, smoothing draws that should have been clunky and finding the missing piece too often. As filtering it looks modest, a one-mana loot with a small recursive tail. As the foundation of an archetype it proved load-bearing enough that Wizards pulled the card rather than the decks it fed.
