Faerie Trickery
Most counters at this price answer a threat once and trust the graveyard to stay shut. This one shuts it too: the exile rider sidesteps every second-life plan a thwarted spell might otherwise feed, from flashback to reanimation to the whole recursion economy that makes countering a creature or sorcery less than final. That permanence is what you pay for, alongside the type clause and a price one mana north of the cleanest hard counters. The restriction is the honest part of the design: a counter that can never touch a Faerie is parochial by construction, and the wager is that the spells you most want to exile are not Faeries anyway. Wizards built it for a Faerie deck precisely because that archetype rarely needs to counter Faeries: its own threats fly under the clause, and the opposing decks it wants to police are almost never tribal kin. The seam shows in a Faerie mirror, where a meaningful slice of the opposing board arrives as Faeries the spell cannot legally name; there it narrows to a partial answer, useful against the fixed-tribe portion of the matchup but unable to break a key turn the way a clause-free counter could. Everywhere else it is a clunkier exile-counter dragging a restriction that does nothing. This is not a design reaching for universality; it is the answer one specific archetype wants, priced so no other deck has much reason to register it, and it weaponizes the exact tribe whose presence makes the type clause nearly free to pay.
