Excise the Imperfect

The clever restriction here is that unconditional exile comes bundled with a compensation clause: whatever you banish hands its former controller an Incubator token sized to its mana value. White has always paid a premium for clean answers, and its cheapest exile effects usually attach a caveat (a token for the opponent, a bit of life gain, a floor on what can be hit), but few phrase the caveat this precisely. The counter count scales exactly to what you removed, so exiling a mana rock leaves them a trivial 2/2-in-waiting while exiling a commander or a large threat hands back a genuine body they then have to spend mana to flip. That symmetry governs the whole exchange: this answers anything nonland, at instant speed, without conditions, but the more valuable your target, the more you have paid to remove it. The Incubate framing does structural work that Phyrexian oil themes lean on elsewhere, converting removal into deferred material rather than card advantage. It rewards pointing the spell at cheap, high-impact permanents (planeswalkers with low mana values, utility creatures, problematic enchantments) where the returned token is negligible, and punishes using it as catch-all removal for expensive bombs. The design sits somewhere between a true answer and a temporary setback, which is a deliberate choice: exile is permanent, but the compensation ensures the opponent is never left with nothing.
