Excavation Elephant
A 3/5 for five mana is a stout wall in a common slot, sturdy enough to trade up against the twos and threes of an aggressive curve without doing anything else. The kicker layers a second, entirely optional job on top: pay an extra and the elephant fishes an artifact card out of your graveyard on arrival. What keeps that from feeling like a tax is that neither half strands the other. Unkicked, the body already earns its inclusion; kicked, you fold a piece of artifact recursion into a creature you were happy to cast anyway. The restraint that keeps it honest is the return-to-hand clause: the artifact goes back to your hand, not the battlefield, so you re-cast and re-pay for it, and the elephant never becomes a free reanimation loop. It asks you to be running artifacts worth retrieving before the upside means anything, and hands you a defensive body when you are not. That structure (a serviceable creature carrying a bonus that only activates when the mana and the target line up) is the workhorse template for value commons, the white-and-artifact answer to the incremental grind of returning one permanent at a time.
