Evolutionary Escalation

Handing an opponent three +1/+1 counters at the start of your turn sounds like a Group Hug card, and structurally it is: a two-mana enchantment that fattens creatures on both sides of the table. What breaks the parity is the word "opponent," which puts the choice of recipient in your hands. Point the gift at the player least equipped to use it, or at a creature whose swollen body threatens nobody, and the deal tilts your way. Better still, the counters are physical material sitting on the board, so a sacrifice outlet, a proliferate engine, or a way to steal the enlarged creature converts the handout into a second payoff. The timing does quiet work, but not the work you might assume. The trigger fires only at the beginning of your upkeep, and both targets are locked in when it goes on the stack; anyone who cares can respond before it resolves, so the recipient of the opponent's gift is public knowledge and negotiable in real time. The other catch is that the enlarged creature is live immediately: it can block during your very next combat step, eating an attacker the same turn you fed it. So this is not a pure delayed payoff. It is a sequencing problem you take on every turn cycle, choosing a recipient whose growth you can survive or exploit before your own board turns the corner. The rate is never the point; the point is the politics of who receives it, and what they can do with it before it comes back around.
