The trigger condition is the whole design here: a mana value threshold rather than a spell type. Most token-generating enablers ask what a spell is (an artifact, an instant, a noncreature spell); this one asks only how much it costs, which means the payoff scales with a deckbuilding decision most players are already making. Every big spell you cast, regardless of color or category, buys a flier on the way down. That reframes the fragile 2/1 body from a beater into a payoff waiting on its top end: it wants a curve stacked with four-plus drops, not the cheap chaff that usually fills out an artifact shell. The Thopters are the reward for going bigger, not for going wide, and each one arrives as a rider on a spell you were casting anyway, so the tokens cost no additional cards or mana. The tension is that a 2/1 for dies to almost anything before it triggers even once, so the engine only turns over in a deck built to protect it long enough to reach the expensive half of its curve. It sits in a long line of artifact-and-token enablers, but where most of those care about artifact count or spell type, keying off raw mana value is the wrinkle that lets it read spells no artifact-matters card would otherwise notice.
