Adapt arrived as a Simic mechanic, printed on creatures whose payoff came from a body that jumped past a threshold once and stayed there. This keeps the counter-based skeleton and rewires the engine that fuels it. The activation opens at a steep figure but drops for each other artifact you control, so the growth scales with the width of your battlefield rather than anything in the graveyard: a black one-drop with evasion that turns into a 5/5 flier once the board fills out is a wholly different threat depending on the shell wrapped around it. That is the point. The adapt cost is a dial the rest of the deck sets, and the mechanic's design does the balancing work: adapt only adds counters while the creature has none, so once it grows there is no loop to repeat unless those counters are later removed. The block restriction is the quiet half of the design. Even grown into a beater, it can block only fliers, so it holds nothing on the ground and functions purely as a one-directional threat in the air. What makes the design worth noting is the re-pointing: taking a keyword and giving its activation a reduction hung on an artifact count, all without disturbing the counter-based body adapt was written around. The skeleton is unchanged; only the resource it cares about has shifted color and category.
