Engulfing Flames

InstantRed mana

The single point of damage is the cover story; the real payload is the regeneration clause. In an era when regenerators leaned on shielding effects and activated regeneration to refuse death in combat, a one-mana burn spell that switches off regeneration for the turn is a surgical answer to a creature your team already cracked into but couldn't finish. The damage mops up X/1 utility bodies; the can't-be-regenerated rider is what closes out the fattie that keeps walking off your blocks. Flashback is the mechanic that promotes a narrow piece of removal into something worth a slot: a single copy answers two threats across two turns, the second cast paid out of the graveyard once the front half has done its work. That is the graveyard-as-resource philosophy this design came up under, applied to a spell whose first job is purely defensive. The structure (cheap now, expensive later, exiled after the encore) means it never clogs a hand the way a dedicated anti-regeneration card would: the copy that's dead in most matchups is one you pitch early and rebuy only when the board actually demands a second kill.
