SorceryBlack mana

Targeted discard so narrow it answers a question almost no deck of its era asked: strip a single nonbasic land from an opponent's hand, and nothing else. The design sits in the strange corner of late-90s black hand attack where Wizards was still experimenting with discard keyed to a specific card type. Where Coercion let the caster take anything and Hymn to Tourach took at random, this one is locked to nonbasic lands, a category that in 1999 was thin enough on game-warping options that the spell often had nothing worth grabbing. The clearest read is that the card names a threat ahead of the threat's existence: the high-impact utility land, the manland, the land that wins games on its own. Most decks of the period kept their power in their spells, not their manabase, so the card's strategic axis (pull the dangerous land out of the hand before it can ever hit the battlefield, before it can be cracked or activated) pointed at a design space that had not yet filled in. That produces a wild ceiling-to-floor spread baked into the targeting clause: rip a game-defining utility land from the hand, or, against a deck whose nonbasics are dual lands and other plain fixing, settle for clipping a single source and calling it a cheap Stone Rain. It is an artifact of a design philosophy that had not yet decided whether nonbasic lands deserved their own hate, drawn before the thing it punishes had grown into a real category.
