Empty-Shrine Kannushi

Protection that reads its shield off your own board is a stranger thing than the rate suggests. Most protection clauses name a fixed color, locking the creature against one slice of the metagame the moment it is printed. This one recalculates as your permanents change: an untouched mono-color board gives it protection from your own color and very little else, while a five-color spread turns a 1/1 into something almost nothing can target, block, or damage. The design tension is deliberate, and it is more vicious than it first looks. The deck that maximizes coverage is the deck least equipped to do anything with a 1/1, so you want a payoff that does not care about the body's size. But the obvious one is a trap: any colored Aura or Equipment you control adds its color to the count, and the moment the Kannushi gains protection from that color, your own Aura cannot legally enchant it and falls off as a state-based action. The same loop bites equipment colors and any colored permanent you add to suit it up. So the card resists the very thing that would make it a threat. The wrinkle cuts the other way too: a sacrifice, a bounce, or a color-shifting permanent can open a hole an opponent could not exploit a turn earlier. It is a puzzle box, not a beater: a one-drop that asks you to manage which colors sit on the battlefield as carefully as which spells sit in hand.
