Emerald Medallion

Artifact2 generic mana

One fifth of the cycle that taught a generation of players what a cost reducer is worth. The Medallions each shave a generic mana off spells of their color, and green's slice was always the awkward one: green is the color of permanents that ramp on their own, so a flat one-mana discount competes with the mana dorks and land-fetchers green already prints by the fistful. The card's logic is cleanest where green stops being a ramp color and becomes a spell-volume color, where you are casting multiple green spells per turn and the discount compounds across a sequence rather than just accelerating a single drop. Note the boundary the wording draws: it only touches casting cost, so it rewards chaining cheap spells, not parking one expensive bomb under it. The artifact-and-color-agnostic body matters too: it survives most green-hostile sweepers because it is not a creature, and it asks nothing of your manabase since any deck running enough green to fill the rate already supports it. The whole Medallion cycle was an early, careful answer to a hard design question (how do you make cost reduction strong without making it broken), and the answer was a fixed, generic-only, single-color discount that never crossed into free-spell territory.
