Emberwilde Captain

Creature — Djinn Pirate3 generic manaRed mana

Red rarely gets to punish a player for holding cards, and this Djinn Pirate does it by turning the throne itself into bait. Take the crown when it enters, and the usual way opponents pry the monarchy loose (swinging in to steal it) now costs them damage scaled to their own hand size. The interaction is self-correcting in a way most punisher effects are not: a player who has been drawing off their own monarch turns is exactly the one sitting on a fat hand, so the tax grows in proportion to how well the throne has been treating them. The 4/2 is a deliberate liability. It threatens as an attacker but dies to almost any two damage, meaning the crown it guards is never truly safe and an opponent who kills the Captain before combat pays nothing at all. That fragility is the pressure valve; without it, the effect would slam the monarchy shut and stop the crown from ever changing hands. This is red's political-friction school of design, the creatures that never win outright but make everyone else's best line cost blood, and its target is precise: the crown-stealing rush that the monarch subsystem otherwise encourages.

When this creature enters, you become the monarch. Whenever an opponent attacks you while you're the monarch, this creature deals damage to that player equal to the number of cards in their hand.
