Ember Weaver

Creature — Spider2 generic manaGreen mana

On its own, the green half is honest fixing for the ground game: a 2/3 with reach that walls off the air while the board develops, the kind of body that quietly covers a deck's weakest axis. The gold-card trick is what gives it teeth. Control any red permanent (a red creature, a red enchantment, anything that satisfies the color check) and a static ability lights up, turning the spider into a 3/3 with first strike while that red stays on the table. The wording matters: lands won't do the work, since basic Mountains and most nonbasics are colorless, so the card wants actual red on the battlefield rather than just red sources, which points it squarely at the two-color deck it was built to reward. This is the multicolor philosophy of an earlier era miniaturized to common: a two-color upgrade bolted onto a mono-green chassis so the creature stays castable off a single source while paying off the second you commit to the second color. And the bonus cuts both ways. First strike on a reach blocker is arguably better defense than offense: a 3/3 first striker eats three-toughness fliers and ground attackers without taking a point back, so the red clause does not just push the spider into the red zone, it makes the wall it was printed to be that much harder to climb over.
