Elspeth Resplendent
The keyword counter on her plus is the quiet innovation. Where an anthem or an aura leaves the board the moment the buffing permanent does, a counter from among flying, first strike, lifelink, or vigilance is written onto the creature itself and stays there after she is gone. Buff the same body twice and it keeps both keywords, plus a growing stack of +1/+1 counters, no strings attached. The minus-three folds card selection and insurance into one motion: dig seven, cheat a permanent of mana value three or less into play, and hand it a shield counter so the first removal spell or block simply peels the counter off. It is a put-into-play effect narrowed to the low end of the curve and pre-answered against the immediate response. The ultimate breaks the pattern the rest of the card sets: five 3/3 white flying Angels, a straightforward token swarm rather than another exercise in distributing counters. That contrast is the tell. Her first two abilities want to make an existing board permanently sturdier, counter by counter and shield by shield, which is a patient, attrition-minded posture; the ultimate is the reward for surviving that long, the payoff that finally does its own dirty work. She is built to grind a board into permanence rather than to swing tempo the way earlier Elspeths did, right up until the loyalty is high enough to stop being patient.
