Elkin Lair

World Enchantment3 generic manaRed mana

A symmetrical World enchantment built on a chaos premise: every player, every upkeep, surrenders a random card from hand to a fleeting one-turn window of access. The World supertype is the structural valve. Only one of these exists on the battlefield at a time, so a second copy retires the first, which keeps the effect from stacking into total handlock and gives the symmetry a built-in expiration. The mechanism is closer to a forced impulse draw than a discard: the exiled card is playable this turn, then lost if it goes unused. That timing creates the tension. You are not losing the card outright, you are being asked to spend it on a clock you did not choose, often before you have the mana to cast what randomness handed you. The "at random" clause is the engine of the imbalance, since a player whose deck plays well off the top, or who can answer their own forced reveal, suffers far less than one hoarding situational answers. It belongs to the small World enchantment family from the era, a design slot Wizards eventually stepped away from because the singleton rule made the cards swingy and prone to misremembered interactions. The card reads as red's idea of a card-advantage engine filtered through red's distrust of holding cards: it punishes the grindy hand and rewards whoever is most comfortable letting go.

Rules text

At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player exiles a card at random from their hand. The player may play that card this turn. At the beginning of the next end step, if the player hasn't played the card, they put it into their graveyard.
