The interesting move here is the marriage of two counter mechanics into a single value engine. Bolster on its own is a deployment tool: it concentrates +1/+1 counters onto whatever creature has the least toughness, sidestepping the awkwardness of picking a recipient by automatically buffing your most fragile body. Because bolster instructs you to choose rather than target, it slides those counters onto a creature with hexproof or shroud without issue. What turns that from a stat boost into a strategic axis is the second ability, which triggers whenever a creature you control that has a +1/+1 counter attacks, tapping a defender. The counters stop being numbers and become keys that peel blockers away one per attacker, so a counters-laden board crashes through unimpeded. The entry bolster guarantees at least one of those keys exists the moment the body lands, so the package is self-starting rather than waiting on a board already stocked with counters. Note that the least-toughness creature can be the Scaleguard itself on an empty board or when everything else already outsizes it; in that case the 4/5 body carries its own counter and taps a blocker when it swings. The 2/3 frame is the honest price: bare, it would rather stay home and let its counter-bearing teammates attack. The design rewards width with depth attached, spreading +1/+1 counters across a team so each attacker drags a defender out of the way, and a pile of marginal buff effects becomes a combat-locking engine.
