The pairing of a 0/4 Defender body with a spellcast trigger is the giveaway: this is a wall built for the deck that never wants to attack and never wants to be attacked. Spells-matter decks have always had a problem closing games, since their gameplan is to durdle through a stack of cantrips and burn while the clock runs out. This answers that by turning the same instants and sorceries you were already casting into incremental reach, one point at a time, while the four toughness keeps aggressive starts from punishing the durdle. The trigger fires on the cast, not on resolution, so a countered or fizzled spell still pings: the ping is locked in the moment you put the spell on the stack, which rewards racing in a way that a resolution-based clause would not. Two mana for a body that survives most early creatures and rots opposing aggro decks from the top of the curve is a reasonable rate for a creature that asks nothing of you except that you keep doing what your deck does anyway. It contributes nothing to the board's offense and everything to the deck's identity, which is exactly the trade a spell-velocity shell wants to make.
