Electric Eel

Creature — FishBlue mana

A blue creature that hurts you to play and hurts you again to attack, built when self-damage was being tested as a balancing axis alongside mana cost. The math is brutal: a 1/1 that costs a life to land, then demands double red and another point of life every time you want it to hit for three instead of one. That red activation is the tell. This is a blue creature whose only relevant ability requires a second color it cannot produce, a deliberate friction that ties the card to a heavy-red gold deck while pretending to be a clean one-drop. Designs from this period frequently leaned on this kind of cross-color tax and chained self-damage to gate effects that a simple mana cost could have priced instead, a discipline modern design largely abandoned once life-as-resource proved too swingy and too punishing to print at common. The result reads less like a tournament card than a record of a balancing philosophy Wizards eventually walked away from: power gated behind pain, splash colors used as a brake rather than an enabler, and an aggressive body that bleeds its own controller faster than it bleeds anyone else.
