Ebony Owl Netsuke

Artifact2 generic mana

Punishment for hoarding, sold for two mana. The threshold is the whole design: seven cards is the maximum hand size, so this only fires when an opponent ends their turn sitting on a full grip and refuses to spend it. That makes it a tax aimed squarely at control and combo decks that draw extra, counter early, and bank answers for later, while it does precisely nothing to an aggressive opponent emptying their hand onto the board every turn. Four damage per upkeep is a real clock (three triggers is twelve, more than half a starting life total), but the trigger is voluntary on the receiving end: cast something, hold fewer than seven, and the artifact goes silent. That is the structural catch with hand-size hate. It punishes a behavior the opponent can simply choose to stop, which means it pairs naturally with effects that force the grip to stay swollen: symmetric draw, gift-a-card aggression, anything that fills their hand faster than they can comfortably empty it. Against a deck playing Magic at a normal pace it is a soft threat, biting only the player who genuinely wants to keep every card drawn. Designs that tax the act of drawing or holding excess cards directly have generally proven more reliable than counting to seven; what this offers instead is a cheap, repeatable burn engine against the one archetype that least wants to break its own hoard.
