Dwarven Thaumaturgist

Creature — Dwarf Shaman2 generic manaRed mana

A power/toughness swap reads like a parlor trick until you notice what it is built to exploit: the gap between a creature's two numbers. On a vanilla body the effect is symmetrical noise, but the design assumes a battlefield full of asymmetric stat lines, where flipping a 5/1 into a 1/5 either saves your blocker or trades up against an opponent's. The tap cost makes this a repeatable, turn-by-turn manipulation rather than a single-use spell, so the engine wants to live across multiple combat steps: shrink a defender so it dies to your attacker this turn, then untap and rescue your own creature the next. What balances the effect is the fragile 1/2 frame and the tap on the ability: any opponent holding a removal spell can simply kill the shaman before its window opens, and tapping for the switch leaves the Dwarf unable to do anything else that turn. The activation works at instant speed, which is where the real value sits. Hold it until blocks are locked in but damage has not yet resolved, and the toughness an attacker was counting on to survive evaporates. It belongs to an old lineage of red toughness-as-a-resource designs, a color usually denied defensive tools but handed a backdoor here, since switching a high-power, low-toughness creature is a way to turn an opponent's own aggression into a liability.
