Dutiful Return

Sorcery3 generic manaBlack mana

Two creatures back from the yard for four mana, sorcery speed, is the kind of rate a common-slot designer reaches for when a set wants graveyard recursion to exist without warping around it. The math is deliberately flat: one mana for the spell, three for the value it returns, no selection, no discount, no reanimation straight onto the battlefield. Because it targets up to two creature cards, it scales to whatever your graveyard offers: a full two-for-one when the yard is stocked, a plain Regrowth-for-creatures when only one target is available, and dead only when the graveyard has no creatures at all. That flexibility is what keeps it playable at the low end rather than a rigid two-or-nothing spell. Its natural home is the back half of a grind: a deck that has been trading bodies, sacrificing threats, or feeding the yard on purpose gets to rebuy the pieces it already spent. It is a payoff for attrition, not an engine that starts one. Black has a long line of these mass-return-to-hand effects, and this sits at the plainest end: no upside beyond raw card advantage, no clever timing, just up to two cards changing zones. It fills the space between pricier value spells and single-target regrowth effects, useful for looping cheap utility creatures or reclaiming a sacrificed threat, ignorable wherever the graveyard is incidental.
