Dungeon Shade

Creature — Shade Spirit3 generic manaBlack mana

The mana-sink flier in its purest, oldest form: a 1/1 evasive body that converts every spare black mana into a point of size, the design template that turned "shade" into shorthand for exactly this effect. The lineage runs back to the original Shade in Alpha, and the mechanic is doing two jobs at once. The flying clause guarantees the points of pump are not wasted on a stalled board, so the activation is always live as a clock. And because the buff fades at the end of each turn, the card never banks its growth: every attack becomes a fresh negotiation between how much mana you can spare for damage now and how much you need to hold open for instant-speed defense. A 1/1 in a vacuum is nothing, but a 1/1 that becomes a 4/4 the turn you draw a fistful of Swamps rewrites a race in a single combat step. The trade-off is real on the back side: outside combat the body is a 1/1 again, which is precisely the window most sorcery-speed removal wants, so the Shade asks you to spend your mana when the points matter and accept fragility when they do not. That repeated negotiation, every combat, is what gives an evasive one-drop-sized body its teeth as a late-game threat. It is the textbook expression of a black flier as flood insurance: in a game where you have more mana than spells, the Shade turns dead land draws into damage.
