The board wipe that lets you keep one. That clause is the whole pivot: where most sweepers force a clean break and reset both sides to zero, this one hands the caster a single survivor, which changes the math from symmetry to asymmetry. You aren't choosing whether to wipe; you're choosing whether the wipe also leaves you a clock, a value engine, or a commander still standing while everyone else rebuilds. The cost reflects that exception. Seven mana across three colors is steep next to a four-mana symmetrical wrath, and the three-color identity is the price you pay for breaking the rule that a sweeper should sweep evenhandedly. There is restraint built into the wording, too: it is "up to one," so when you have nothing worth saving you can fire it as a pure board reset and decline the exemption. The friction that keeps the asymmetry fair is the deckbuilding tax: to exploit the keep-one clause meaningfully you need a board state where you are ahead enough to have a creature worth protecting, which is exactly the position where a symmetrical wrath would hurt you most. It answers a real strategic problem for three-color control: how to reach for a reset without surrendering your own threats in the process.
