Due Respect

A Stun-counter approach to tempo that predates the mechanic by years: instead of slapping summoning sickness on a single creature, the effect blankets every permanent that hits the battlefield for the rest of the turn, yours and theirs alike. Cast at the right window, it functions as a partial Time Walk against a developing board. Suppose an opponent untaps, plays a land, and slams a haymaker meant to swing; resolve this before the threat enters and the creature arrives tapped, unable to attack and unable to block until they next untap, since a tapped creature cannot be declared as a blocker regardless of haste. The symmetry is the cost: anything you deploy the same turn comes in tapped too, which is why the play wants to live on the opponent's turn, on their crackback, where the downside touches nothing of yours. The replacement card keeps the line from being empty tempo, smoothing the worst case where the opponent simply held back and developed nothing. What makes the design strange is how it buys a turn without removing anything: nothing dies, nothing is countered, the board just freezes mid-step. The catch is that it only freezes what cares about being tapped. A planeswalker that enters tapped can still activate a loyalty ability that turn, so the lock lands hardest on creatures and attacks, not on deployment as a whole. That puts it closer in spirit to a Fog than to a counterspell, aimed at the swing rather than the strike.
