Mana ramp is usually something you pay for up front: a creature that taps, a rock that sits on the battlefield, an enchantment that fixes whatever you cast next turn. This one charges itself instead. The counters only stack when your creatures swing, which ties the entire mana-producing engine to a battle plan you were already committed to: a wide board that attacks every turn quietly builds a reservoir of any-color mana on the side. The timing is friendlier than the rate suggests. The charge counter lands in the declare-attackers step, before blockers are chosen, so the mana is available immediately, in time to pump an attacker, cast a trick, or force through a creature your opponent was about to gang up on. That makes the reservoir reactive in combat rather than just second-main filler. The standing tension is that you are spending down a resource you spent turns accumulating, which rewards a deck with a top end worth the wait and a board that keeps attacking to refill the bank. As a payoff it is slow and conditional, which is the price for color-fixing this open-ended; an attacking board rarely cares what color its extra mana is, only that there is more of it, exactly when the swing demands it.
