Drudge Skeletons

Creature — Skeleton1 generic manaBlack mana

The original textbook for regeneration. The earliest sets printed a small handful of cards built to teach the mechanic, and one survived the early years as the canonical demonstration: a fragile frame whose entire reason to exist is to refuse to die. The design is deliberately recursive in a way modern black rarely revisits. The regeneration cost matches what a single Swamp produces, so a player with one untapped land always has the shield available, and the small frame ensures the skeleton never trades up by force; it survives by declining to trade at all. That is the lesson plan. A creature that costs one mana per combat phase to keep alive teaches a new player what regeneration is, what a "destroy" effect is (and isn't), and why exile and sacrifice exist as answers. Later regenerators reframed the same engine to different ends: Sedge Troll priced the shield against the body, Spectral Lynx moved the ability into white-black, Wall of Bone gave it a defensive frame. None of them replaced the skeleton as the picture in the dictionary. The errata history matters too: the reminder text on the printed card has been rewritten more than once as the rules around regeneration tightened, but the function (the next destroy becomes a tap-and-heal) has been stable since the beginning.

Black mana: Regenerate this creature. (The next time this creature would be destroyed this turn, instead tap it, remove it from combat, and heal all damage on it.)
