Drown in the Loch

The scaling clause is the whole trick: a two-mana modal spell that is either a hard counter or unconditional creature removal, but only within the window that a graveyard opens. On turn one it does nothing; by the mid-game, when both players have churned lands, cantrips, and spent spells into the yard, the ceiling on what it can hit climbs high enough to answer nearly anything. That inversion is what makes the design worth studying: most cheap interaction is at its sharpest early and dead late, but this one is a blank in the opening turns and a Swiss-army knife once the game has developed. The modality compounds the value; a single card that flexes between the stack and the battlefield rarely rots in hand once the yards fill, and the choice is deferred to the moment of casting, so it reads whatever the opponent presents. Note the direction the size clause points: both modes measure the target's controller's graveyard, not yours, so the card scales off the opponent's own resource management. An opponent leaning on delve, flashback, or graveyard recursion actively works against it by exiling and recurring cards out of their own yard, shrinking the very count that determines what you can hit. Against those decks the loch can run dry at the worst moment. It is a piece of interaction that gets stronger the longer a game grinds, priced to hold up while you spend your turns elsewhere.
