Drifting Shade

Creature — Shade3 generic manaBlack mana

The Shade template, stripped to its bones: an evasive body with no built-in size, asking you to feed it mana to make it matter. Every Shade since these creatures first appeared runs on the same engine, converting a flooded land base into combat damage and back, but the flying is what reshapes the math. A ground Shade pumps into a blocker and trades; this one pumps into the air, where most defenders can't follow. The 1/1 base means the turn it resolves it threatens little, sitting there as a promise rather than a play, and that delayed payoff is the bargain: it is mana-hungry by design, scaling with however much swamp you can spare on a given attack. The black symbol in the activation cost is the whole identity, tying the card's ceiling directly to the deck's color commitment and rewarding the kind of heavily-black build that has nothing better to do with its tenth land. It is a clock that accelerates the longer the game runs, the inverse of most aggressive bodies, which decay in relevance as the board stalls. Where a fixed-size flier hardens into a chump or a topdeck, a Shade with mana behind it becomes a finisher the opponent has to race or remove.
