The reward here is built backwards from how most black removal works: instead of paying mana for an effect, you get the effect for free as a rider on whatever you were already doing, provided you do it on the opponent's turn. That timing clause is the whole mechanism. It quietly mandates an instant-heavy shell and offers nothing to a sorcery-speed deck, because the trigger only fires for spells you cast while it is the opponent's turn. Stack two or three cheap instants in a single opposing turn and the -1/-1 effects pile up, blanking an attacker before it connects or shrinking a creature into lethal range of your own blockers. The body is incidental: a flying 2/2 Faerie Wizard that fits a flash-creature tribe and chips in while the trigger does the actual work. What lifts it past a marginal beater is the conversion of reactive tempo plays into repeatable, mana-free shrinking, paying off whoever was already holding up instants to interact on the opponent's clock. The ceiling is an attrition engine that grows with every spell you cast during your opponent's turn; the floor is a do-nothing 2/2 in a list that does most of its casting proactively. That gap is the discipline the design asks for in exchange for the free removal.
