Control Magic was the template, and this is the variant built around a single, deliberate cost: the target has to already be tapped. That clause turns a blunt steal effect into a tempo transaction. You can't grab the creature your opponent is holding back; you take the one that committed to the board and is now caught with its mana spent, the freshly-swung attacker on the crackback or the creature that just tapped for an ability. The window is narrow on purpose. Both this and Control Magic are sorcery-speed Auras, so neither can ambush a permanent mid-combat, but Control Magic at least lets you choose anything on the board on your turn. This one demands the permanent be tapped first, which means you are reading the board a beat late rather than a beat early, waiting for the opponent to use their best permanent before you claim it. The payoff for that patience is breadth: it enchants any permanent, not just creatures, so a tapped artifact or a land that just produced mana is fair game alongside attackers. That generality is the design's real ambition. Most aura-based theft effects narrow themselves to creatures to keep the math clean; this one trades the convenience of grabbing anything for the freedom to grab anything that has tapped, leaving the permanent type wide open. It punishes the opponent for using their resources, not merely for owning them.
