Dread Return

Cast it for mana and you get a slow, fair reanimation spell that returns a single creature from your graveyard; nobody plays this card to do that. The alternative cost is what built an archetype around it: paying three sacrificed creatures, with no mana required, from the graveyard. The structural sleight is that the three bodies you feed it are the engine that produces a board worth converting in the first place. A wide table of disposable tokens or recursive creatures becomes fuel, and the payoff is whatever monster sits in your graveyard waiting. That makes the card a converter rather than a payoff, a way to cash a pile of small creatures into one large threat at the moment of your choosing. The flashback exile clause caps it at a single graveyard cast, so any loop has to be assembled from other recursion: token generators, sacrifice fodder that returns on its own, or a reanimation target that drags its own fuel back with it. Few reanimation spells decouple the resource you spend and the body you gain so completely from mana, and that property is precisely what has kept it pinned to dedicated graveyard combo decks and made it a recurring ban subject whenever the supporting pieces grow too efficient.
