Dragonstalker

Few sets have ever announced their theme as bluntly as this. Scourge was the Dragon set, the capstone of a block that pushed the creature type into every color and onto every power level, and this Bird Soldier is the answer Wizards handed players who wanted to fight back without splashing red. Protection from Dragons is the most narrowly aimed protection clause printed to that point: it does nothing against anything that is not a Dragon, which makes the card a thermometer reading on exactly how many Dragons the designers expected to see across the table. The body underneath is plain (a flying 3/3 for five), the kind of midrange flyer that would be filler in almost any other context. The protection is what gives it teeth: it cannot be blocked by Dragons, cannot be targeted by their abilities, takes no combat damage from them, and slides under any targeting or damage-based removal a Dragon might carry. That turns a fair flyer into a creature that can chip in for three against a Dragon-heavy board with total impunity, racing past blockers that would otherwise wall it. It is a hyper-specific hoser dressed as a generically useful creature, and its existence is a small piece of design honesty: a set this committed to one tribe needed a printed pressure valve, and this is what one looks like.
