Dragonlair Spider
A tax that pays itself out, one bug at a time. Most punisher creatures make the opponent choose between paying a price and forgoing a play; this one skips the choice and simply skims a body off the top of every spell they cast, whether it is a burn spell, a counter, a combat trick, or a game-ending bomb. The genius is where the trigger lands: not on your spells, not on your upkeep, but on the opponent's own engine, so the more they try to interact or dig their way out, the wider your board of blockers and attackers grows. Against a control deck it turns every answer into a two-for-one in your favor; against a combo deck it builds a chump-block wall while they assemble their pieces; against another creature deck it just quietly out-numbers them. The 5/6 with reach is the anchor that makes this stick, big enough to survive most sweepers-that-aren't and to block fliers while the Insects pile up on the ground. It reads as a green-red beater with a cute rider, but the rider is the whole design: a soft resource tax that flips a defensive stance into an inevitability engine, punishing the exact behavior an opponent needs to fall behind on board to win.
