Dowsing Dagger // Lost Vale

The clever part of this design is that the drawback is a fiction, but not quite the way you'd first guess. Handing an opponent two 0/2 Plants with defender reads like a real concession, and as blockers those bodies genuinely do their job: they stand in front of the ground and eat combat damage that would otherwise reach the player. The trick is that the card wants a carrier those two tokens can't answer. The transform is gated on combat damage to a player, so the payoff belongs to evasion: flying carries the +2/+1 clean over two grounded Plants, while unblockable ignores them entirely, and the two chumps become dead weight the opponent paid nothing to receive. Note that menace alone doesn't get there; two blockers are exactly enough to double-block a menace creature and keep the damage off the face, so the flip stalls unless something else opens the lane. The +2/+1 isn't there to punch through blockers (a stat buff doesn't beat a chump); it keeps an evasive carrier alive and connecting turn after turn. Land the hit and you may flip into Lost Vale, and here the design has one last wrinkle: transforming turns the artifact into a Land, which sheds the Equipment subtype and falls off the creature immediately. You trade the buff for a permanent that taps for three mana of a single color, a ramp fixture rather than a one-shot ritual, and the threat is on its own again. The equip cost of two keeps the package honest by asking you to recommit if the first carrier dies, a price that looks steep on the ground and evaporates in the air, where the carrier was always going to live.
