Douser of Lights
Five toughness is what earns this its keep: it survives most cheap burn and turns aside attackers who would trade cleanly into a 4/5's four power. That is the whole design. A vanilla 4/5 for five at common rarity is the game's standard-issue defensive wall, printed to give a slower black deck something to stand behind while it digs toward its actual payoffs. There is nothing engineered past that: no evasion, no enters-the-battlefield value, no late-game mana sink, no creature type built to matter. It clogs the ground, absorbs a midgame push, and demands no supporting cast. That plainness is deliberate rather than a failure. Not every common needs a hook, and a reliable stall is a real job in the range where a color that wins by outlasting rather than outracing wants to steady its footing. Where card pools run deep, the same stat line loses out to bodies that also draw, block flyers, or threaten a return on the mana; where they run shallow, a four-power blocker with survivable toughness is exactly the kind of load-bearing filler that keeps a defensive deck alive long enough for its payoffs to matter.
