Doomsday

The card that taught a generation what a deck-construction puzzle actually feels like. Most tutors fetch a single answer; this one demolishes your library down to a five-card stack of your choosing, then dares you to win before you draw past the bottom of it. Paying half your life rounded up forces the issue: you cast this with a plan to end the game on the spot, not to grind value, and that constraint birthed an entire genre of combo construction. The real deckbuilding happens off the battlefield. You are not assembling sixty cards so much as the five you will stack after resolution, and every one of them has to draw, protect, or kill on a razor-thin margin. The stack you leave behind is a sequence with no slack, which is why the card's name became shorthand for a whole school of all-in combo thinking. The deeper trick is that it changes the unit of construction: the question stops being "what sixty cards" and becomes "what five cards, in what order, with what draw engine waiting to fire them off." Few sorceries ask the player to think this far ahead of the spell itself, and fewer still have lent their name to a strategy that outlived their printing.
