Diving Griffin

The pairing of flying and vigilance is the whole pitch: a body that controls the air on offense and stays back to wall the ground on defense, without the usual turn-by-turn choice between attacking and blocking. That combination has long been white's quiet specialty for evasive midrange creatures, and the value here lives entirely in the fact that those two keywords rarely came stapled together at this rate when it was new. The design carries no riddle and asks for no setup: it does exactly the two things printed on it. What dates it is the era of its printing, an era that leaned on expensive, parasitic mechanics and rewards-for-effort rares, so a clean two-keyword flyer at three mana for a 2/2 read as honest curve-filler against a backdrop of cards that demanded much more to function. Plenty of stronger flyers with vigilance have followed, and the keyword combination stopped being remarkable long ago, but as a record of what white's vanilla-plus creatures looked like in an early design generation, it is a tidy specimen: power expressed not through a clever ability but through the absence of a tradeoff.
