Disrupting Shoal
The free counterspell whose price is a card from your own hand, the pitch mechanic turns its cost backward: you pay nothing in mana and everything in cards, exiling a blue spell you already drew to stop one your opponent is casting. That makes it the rare answer that costs zero on the turn it matters, which is the entire pitch-counter pitch: a counterspell that lands while you are tapped out, on an opponent's end step, mid-combo, whenever holding up two mana was never an option. The variable target is what sharpens and dulls it at once. You counter a spell only if its mana value matches the X you choose, and X is fixed by the mana value of the card you exile, so the answer is exact rather than universal: a one-drop pitches to stop a one-drop, a four-drop to stop a four-drop. It does not stop everything; it stops the specific thing you have a matching card for, which makes deckbuilding a question of curve overlap rather than raw count. The lineage runs through the Alliances pitch cards (Force of Will most famously) and forward into the free-spell cycle that periodically returns: cards that ask whether the tempo of paying nothing is worth the card disadvantage of paying double. Disrupting Shoal answers in the affirmative for any deck dense enough in blue to always have the right number in hand.
