Dire Wolves

Creature — Wolf2 generic manaGreen mana

A green 2/2 whose only printed text borrows a quintessentially white keyword, switched on by a quintessentially white land type. The design logic predates the gold-card era: before Wizards was willing to print multicolor mana costs freely, Ice Age used land-type checks to reward two-color decks, and the Wolves are a clean specimen of that approach. Control a Plains and the body gains banding, the most baroque combat keyword Magic ever printed, a damage-assignment rewrite that lets the attacking or blocking player choose how a blocked creature's combat damage is divided among the creatures it faces. The payoff is narrow and the rules overhead is enormous, which is precisely why the card feels like an artifact of its decade: banding was eventually walled off from new design because abilities like this one demanded a flowchart to resolve a single combat step. What lingers is the structural curiosity of a green creature whose best version exists only alongside white sources, a small monument to the era when your second color was a switch you flipped rather than a manabase you committed to up front.

Rules text

This creature has banding as long as you control a Plains. (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)
