Most removal spells commit to a number the moment you cast them; this one refuses to, handing you two energy and then leaving the size of the shrink entirely up to how much of your reserve you are willing to spend. Pay nothing and it does nothing at all: the energy it grants is a starting stake, not a floor. Pay everything and it becomes a one-card answer to almost any body on the battlefield. The card is a payoff and a sink at once, asking you to have banked counters over earlier turns rather than spent them, and rewarding a deck built around the resource over one merely splashing it. As black removal it is unusual for offloading the answer-rate onto the surrounding deck's energy economy: drawn into a game where the counters never accumulated, it is a feeble half-spell; in a deck humming with them, it overkills nearly everything. The effect being a -X/-X stat reduction rather than destruction matters too. It slides under abilities that key on the word "destroy," quietly handling regenerators and indestructible threats that conventional black removal cannot touch, since dropping toughness to zero ignores indestructibility entirely. The whole design hinges on a choice the spell forces at resolution: how much of a resource you have hoarded are you willing to spend, right now, to shrink this one creature out of the game.
